Are you a foreign-born Canadian citizen and you want to bring your parents who are still living in your home country?

The federal government allows Canadian citizens to bring their parents/grandparents to visit for an extended period. Your parents and grandparents will need to apply for a “Super Visa” for that. What’s the big difference between a regular visit visa and a super visa?
Like so many foreign-born citizens, you may miss them dearly and want their company. Or, you want to show off your adopted country or introduce them to their grandkids or your spouse. If a visitor visa is not sufficient enough, then what can you do?
Your visitor can stay up to five years at a stretch on a single visit with a super visa, whereas a regular visitor visa typically allows up to six months. A super visa is also valid for multiple entries for up to ten years.

Eligibilities for parents/grandparents

Visa officers consider many factors while deciding whether a super visa applicant is admissible. Applicants need to convince them that they are genuine visitors to Canada and at the end of the visit, they will leave by choice.
These are the main factors the officer might consider-
  • The applicant is tied to his/her home country
  • Visit purpose
  • Applicant’s family and financial situation
  • Economic and political stability of the come country
IMM5257 form is to be filled out outside of Canada and you need to submit that to IRCC. The sponsor must provide the following information-
  • Full name
  • Date of Birth
  • Contact information and address
  • Job title
  • Information about status in Canada (Citizenship or PR)
  • Family details including names and date of birth
  • Total number of family members
  • Letter of invitation
  • Proof of minimum income

Super Visa Application Process

To get Super Visa for your parents/grandparents you will need to provide the government with a number of documents and assurance. Your parents/grandparents have to apply through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) including

Official Letter of invitation: Your parents/grandparents will need an official letter of invitation from you
in the given format-

  • Complete name
  • Date of birth/country of birth
  • Address and phone number
  • Relationship to the host
  • Visit purpose
  • Intended stay period
  • Assurance of financial support
  • Details of accommodation
  • Intended date of leaving

Medical Exam: Your parents/grandparents will have to go through a comprehensive medical test, chest x-rays,
and lab tests done by a specially designated doctor.

Travel Insurance: You must obtain medical insurance for your parent or grandparent valid for at least one year from the date of entry, with a minimum of $100,000 coverage. The policy can be purchased from a Canadian insurance company, or from an approved insurance company outside Canada. You will need to submit proof of purchase with the application.

Proof of minimum necessary income: Your parents/grandparents have to prove that their household meets
the minimum necessary income.

Minimum Income requirements: The sponsor must meet a minimum income under the super visa eligibility
criteria, known as Low-Income-Cut-Off (LICO)-

The host/sponsor can prove their income through any of the following
  • A most recent copy of the Notice of Assessment
  • Tax information from CRA
  • Copy of theT4 and T1 from your employer
  • Letter from an accountant confirming annual income, if selfemployed
  • Original letter from employer stating the title, job description, and salary
  • Employment insurance pay stabs
  • Proof of other income sources, for example, Pension statement, investments, etc.
